AAUA VC Counsels Fresh Students to Shun Social Vices …As 3,634 Students Take Matriculation Oath
The Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, Prof. Femi Mimiko, on Tuesday last week, advised the 3,634 fresh students admitted to the Institution for the 2013/2014 academic session to shun vices capable of jeopardizing their studentship.
Prof. Mimiko, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rotimi Ajayi, said, “Let me make it abundantly clear that AAUA has zero tolerance for social vices. Having taken the Matriculation Oath today, I urge you to respect and observe the Oath by eschewing all social vices such as cultism, examination misconduct, truancy, drug addiction, indiscipline, rape, murder, prostitution, indecent dressing, kidnapping and any form of violence.
“This University is governed by laws and the instrumentality of the law shall be applied at any moment of infraction. I sincerely advise you to guard your admission jealously, and resist anything that may want to rub you of this golden privilege to study in this University.”
Congratulating the matriculants on their admission, the VC noted that of the 18,019 candidates that sought admission to the University, only 3,634 were admitted purely on merit. Prof. Mimiko noted that the University’s merit-driven admission policy was a deliberate and
courageous effort to make AAUA globally competitive and distinctive in the 21st century.
He said, “It is an initiative geared toward producing confident, self-reliant and well-rounded graduates who can compete favourably with their colleagues anywhere in the world and be a pride to our country.”
He urged the new students to surrender themselves for the discipline and training the University would instill in them in the next four or five years in order to mould their lives.
Prof Mimiko reiterated that AAUA has been noted for its stable academic calendar in the last five years, adding, “Adekunle Ajasin University remains a beacon of hope as we vigorously strive to give the highest standard of quality education to our students and graduate them at a record time.”
The VC added, “As a result of the philosophy of the Labour Party Government of Ondo State led by our amiable and education loving Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, that no child drops out of
school on account of inability to pay school fees, AAUA charges the least school fees in the country and has a Student Work-Study Scheme to support indigent students and to teach dignity of labour.”
Academic excellence and abide by and respect all the University rules and regulations as handed over to them during the orientation programme.
While urging all students of the University to always observe personal security measures, stay out of trouble and cooperate with the security personnel, the VC promised that the Institution would continue to put relevant machineries in place to guarantee security of lives and property.
He said, “I would, however, want to use this medium to appeal to you to observe personal security. Do not go to unsafe locations. Avoid nocturnal movements. Do not embark on frivolous travels and avoid the company of people with suspicious and questionable character,
and if your life is under threat by anybody, do not hesitate to contact the Security Unit of the University or the Student Affairs.”
The Matriculation Oath was administered on the new students by the University Registrar, Mr. Bamidele Olotu.
