VC Hails SSANU CMS Ingenious Leadership, As Society Inaugurates New Building
The Vice Chancellor, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, Prof. Femi Mimiko, on Tuesday last week, commended the leadership of the Institution’s Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities, SSANU, Cooperative Multipurpose Society, CMS, for providing ingenious governance to the society. Prof. Mimiko gave the commendation at the inauguration ceremony of the newly-built SSANU CMS building.
Prof. Mimiko, who turned the sod of the building on March 3, 2014, said at last week’s inauguration of the building, “I really appreciate you for the great effort you have put into building this beautiful structure.
The leadership of the society promised to deliver in six months’ time but we are inaugurating the building in less than five months’ time. I will like to salute the leadership of the society and vision that went into this building. This is simply beautiful and I am proud of you.”
The VC noted that union leaders should always be proactive by adding values to their members.
He said, “When we have opportunity to lead our unions, the focus should not be how to wrestle down management or authority. It should be how to add value to what we have. Unionism is also something that may be proactive, not something that must be reactive at all times. We can chart a new course. We can think out new ideas. We can dream dreams. Unionism that is still operating at the level of mere agitation is living behind time. Unionism must be able to come out with creative things like this (SSANU CMS Building).”
Prof. Mimiko congratulated all the members of the society for the success of the project and urged the subsequent executives of the society not to go below the standard being set by the incumbent executives.
The VC advised SSANU CMS to demonstrate high level of maintenance culture. He said, “I am sure the minds that conceptualized and built this would also put in place a framework to continue to manage this place very well.”
He also thanked all members of the University Community “for what you are doing for this University. We will continue to join hands to deliver a 21st Century University, Properly called!, a university that is worthy of that name.”
Responding to the request for additional piece of land for another project by the SSANU CMS President, Mr. Akin Adelola, the Vice Chancellor said, “If we receive your proposal, Management will look at it and see on its merit.”
In his Welcome Address, Mr. Adelola, said that the building, which has two offices, a glass compartment reception, a conference room, three lock-up shops, a big warehouse, toilet facilities and parking lot, gulped N 12, 885,200.
He noted that the building became imperative because the rented apartment in the SSANU Secretariat became too small for the operations of the society; and the determination of the incumbent SSANU CMS Exco to fulfill the yearning of members to own a befitting building for the society as approved at its Annual General Meeting.
Mr. Adelola attributed the development to God’s Grace, cooperation of the cooperators, University’s friendly disposition and policy on infrastructural development.
He noted that the Vice Chancellor’s word inspired the leadership of the society to complete the project. He said, “The Vice Chancellor’s words – ‘The glory does not go to the fellow that has excuses for not doing the right thing, but to that fellow that accomplishes his tasks despite all odds’ – did the magic.”
Mr. Adelola thanked the VC for approving the society’s proposal and piece of land for the construction of the building and for personally finding time to monitor the progress of the building when under construction.
The President appreciated the support received from the AAUA Academic Staff Union of Universities CMS, other societies and corporate individuals.
