Welcome to Adekunle Ajasin University Faculty of Law!
The Faculty has as its mandate the training of undergraduates for the legal profession. However, it also undertakes postgraduate training programmes. Within the short period of its relocation to Akungba-Akoko, it has produced a corpus of graduates who have recorded remarkable achievements in the legal profession at both the national and international legal arena. Ours is a fast growing, productive and dynamic Faculty designed to meet the academic, professional and mutual needs of its students and the immediate environment. Our Faculty takes pride in its dazzling performance being one of the best law Faculties in Nigeria and in Africa. In the August 2014 Bar Final Examinations of the Nigerian Law School, one of our graduates, Akeem Opeyemi Longe not only made a First Class but also emerged as the best overall student in the Examinations. Our students consistently maintained over 90% in their Bar Final Examinations in addition to winning prizes and awards. Our students are highly sought-after by employers because of the high standard of legal education received and their critical thinking abilities for the enthronement of a just society for all. As a result, many of our alumni not only practice at top firms in Nigeria and elsewhere but also occupy leadership positions at the Nigerian Bench. Several of them have also distinguished themselves in the public service and in the corporate world.
Over the years, the Faculty has been able to design a law programme that is highly flexible and meets the demands of legal practice in today’s competitive and fast changing world. Our curriculum embraces the modern idea that a lawyer must be able to blend both domestic and international legal ideas.
The Faculty has had seasoned administrators as Dean and a crop of dedicated and efficient academics as lecturers. Over the years, members of the academic staff of the Faculty have contributed immensely to the development of law through their publications in referred local and international journals and books over a wide range of topics. Their contributions are revolutionary, ground-breaking and innovative, particularly in the development of emerging or fairly uncharted areas of law. As a result, they are often consulted by governments, courts and industry.
The Faculty consists of four Departments, viz:
(a) Commercial Law, (b) Private Law, (c) Jurisprudence and International Law, and (d) Public Law. The division into Departments permits specialization and in-depth research.
The Faculty has one of the largest, strongest and most highly ranked clinical programme in Nigeria. The Law Clinic not only helps to cultivate in the students social consciousness but also assist in developing their practical skills, cure courtroom jitters and offer them a unique opportunity to serve the public pro bono. Through the Law Clinic, the Faculty is able to provide basic legal services to indigent members of society while at the same time enables the students to gain valuable practical experience. In order to showcase the legal skills and advocacy abilities of our students, the Faculty has a well-equipped and functional Moot Court with our students excelling in local and international moot court competitions; while also regularly achieving top honours at intra and inter-Faculty University competitions and events.
The Faculty building is sited in a unique and beautiful location on campus. The topography of the location aids its attractiveness and that attractiveness it combines with chic and functionality. There are also spacious and well equipped offices for our staff. The students are highly disciplined and well organized under the umbrella body of the Law Students Society (LSS). They are also divided into Faculty groups for the purposes of competitions like moot and mock trials, as well as debates.
The Faculty believes in research and publishing and so invest much time in improving the writing skills of students. The academic staff are also supported and encouraged by the University to publish. The Faculty houses reputable law journals and several academic books/publications, such as the Akungba Law Journal, the Jurists, among others. The Faculty also boasts of a world class library stocked with current Law books and Law related materials. It has thousands of books and journals and also features the e-library, which enables students and users to access a wide range of material all over the world.
