Dean's Welcome Message

Dean’s Welcome Message

Students and visitors alike are warmly welcome to the Faculty of Science. The Faculty, with over 3,500 regular students, about 150 academic and over 70 administrative, technical and support staff is the largest in the University. As scientists we are always desirous of blazing the trail of sustainable development. We aim to be leaders in training, cutting edge research and community development and immense opportunities and privileges abound to share in our growing fame as well as being a part of our story and evolution.

The Faculty is one of the foundation Faculties in the University and from its modest beginning in 1999, with just a few students and insufficient staff, has evolved into a place of pride as a leader in research and development. The Faculty shares the university’s mission of producing self-reliant graduates who will be job creators and not just job seekers. We place emphasis on nurturing the entrepreneurial skills of our students within their disciplines for the purpose of making their education relevant to the individual, the nation and the world at large. To this end, the Faculty has continued to give quality training to all students to meet the increasingly complex needs of the future, with great emphasis on developing and sharpening the students’ analytical, creative, thinking and presentation skills. Computer literacy and industrial training, which are deeply enmeshed in our academic programmes, are designed to make our graduates relevant in today’s ICT-driven world.

Our community of staff and students continues to make important contributions in the three important aspects of a world-class university namely: – research, teaching and learning and community service. Consequently, the Faculty has a significant proportion of its young and vibrant academic staff conducting Doctoral research all over the world and this new crop of academics is being honed for the next phase of development.

The Faculty offers a broad range of disciplines in the following Departments: Physics & Electronics, Chemical Sciences, Biochemistry, Earth Sciences, Animal and Environmental Biology, Plant Science and Biotechnology, Mathematical Sciences, Computer Science and Microbiology. Currently there are twelve (12) degree programmes in which a new generation of scientists and professionals are being moulded for the challenges of the future. We welcome you to join us.
