You are warmly welcome to the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences (FSMS). The Faculty came into being at the inception of the University in 1982, and it exists to facilitate the education, training and production of Social Scientists, Managers of industry, Geographers, Political Scientists, Sociologists, Psychologists, Economists as well as those who may want to be employers of labour in future.
The Faculty is also interested in manpower development with the sole aim of addressing the emerging global challenges in all facets of human endeavour. Therefore, its programmes are designed to impart theoretical and practical knowledge of the kind that will encourage self-reliance in private individuals as well as in those who may want to operate in the public sector.
The Faculty houses eight Departments which are: Accounting, Banking & Finance, Business Administration, Economics, Geography and Planning Sciences, Political Science and Public Administration, Pure and Applied Psychology and Sociology.
Mass Communication Department will soon move from the Faculty of Arts to the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences. With this new development, the number of Departments in the Faculty is set to increase to nine.
The Faculty offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Undergraduate programmes leading to the award of B.Sc. (Hons) are offered in all the Departments in the Faculty. Postgraduate programmes leading to the award of the M.Sc. and Ph.D are also offered in all the Departments with the exception of departments of Accounting and Business Administration.
Each Department has its own handbook containing general information on such things as admission requirements, registration procedures, regulations governing the administration and conduct of examinations, regulations governing the award of degrees (undergraduates and postgraduates) as well as graduation requirements.
The Faculty also has its own handbook that introduces students to the Faculty. In order to produce quality industrial managers for our society, the Faculty in collaboration with the SIWES unit of the university has established a tradition of compulsory internship programme deeply enmeshed in its academic programmes for her students to be self reliant and relevant in the global market place.
